Bring your own air rifle or use loaner air rifles provided by the CMP. Sporter air rifles and Creedmoor AiR-15 AR-Clones will be available.

National Match Air Rifle (NMAR) is a new shooting sports discipline introduced by the CMP in 2009. NMAR Program Objectives are to:

  • Take full advantage of air rifle shooting’s low cost and easily constructed ranges to create a rifle competition event that is accessible to maximum numbers of shooters.

  • Offer a shooting discipline that is readily adaptable to indoor and wintertime shooting.

  • Provide a competition with off-season training and development opportunities for highpower service and match rifle shooters.

  • Offer a recreation-oriented sporter class competition that anyone can afford and in which inexperienced shooters can readily participate.

  • Offer an adult competition for former junior three-position air rifle shooters

  • To offer an alternative adult competition for shooters who feel that the costs and training demands of high performance competition air rifle and smallbore programs conflict with the demands of their jobs and families.

Rifle Class Descriptions: Competitors in this match may fire either event in one of three Rifle Classes:

  • AR-CLONE CLASS. Rifles in this class look and feel like AR-Type Service Rifles

used in highpower rifle competition. They must have a minimum 3-pound trigger pull and the sights must have the same configuration and sight radius as legal service rifle sights. Two firms, Pilkington Competition Equipment and Creedmoor Sports, now offer AR-Clone air rifles that are legal for NMAR competition. Competitors in this class may use the same shooting jackets, slings and gloves that are legal for use in highpower rifle shooting. This NMAR Class offers current service rifle shooters off-season training and competition. It also offers aspiring service rifle shooters an affordable, accessible way to develop the skills they need to go Distinguished.

Air rifle pellets cost less than two cents per shot and air rifle ranges can be set up in most homes. For more information on the PCE BF-17 go to their website at http://www.pilkguns.com/menu_ar15.shtml. For more information on the Creedmoor-Anschutz AiR-15, go to their website at http://www.creedmoorsports.com/store/home.php.

The Creedmoor-Anschütz AiR-15 features an Anschütz M8001 system in a special AR-type stock.

  • MATCH RIFLE CLASS. Any precision air rifle legal for use in ISSF, USA

  •

Shooting or NRA competition can be used in this NMAR class. Either ISSF-legal or highpower-legal shooting jackets may be used, but special shooting trousers or boots are not legal. This NMAR Class is designed to appeal to both NRA Match Rifle competitors and recreation-oriented air rifle standing shooters.

  • SPORTER RIFLE CLASS. The NMAR Sporter Class is the way to go for adults and juniors who want an accessible, recreation-oriented air rifle competition where equipment costs are low. Any air rifle recognized as a “Sporter Class” rifle by the National Three-Position Air Rifle Council (Daisy 853/753/888/887, Crosman Challenger 2009, AirForce Air Guns Edge) is legal in this class. These air rifles are all available for less than $500. Legal Sporter Class rifles must not weigh more than

7.5 lbs. and their triggers must be capable of lifting 1.5 lbs. Only basic cloth shooting jackets are legal in this class where special equipment is strictly limited. Persons with limited marksmanship training and experience and even new shooters can successfully complete NMAR courses of fire with Sporter Class air rifles.

EVENTS TO BE FIRED.The match program and schedule for the NMAR Introductory Match will allow you to fire both the NMAR Standing and NMAR Full Course events— with the rifle of your choice, AR-Clone, Match or Sporter Air Rifle. The NMAR events that are scheduled at the Introductory Match at Richmond, VA on 27 February are:

  1. Standing Course. 2 sighting shots and 20 shots for record in the standing position, fired on the AR-SR target.

  2. Full Course.3x20 shots fired as follows: 2 sighting shots and 20 shots for record in the standing position, fired on the ARSR target. 2 sighting shots and 20 shots for record in the sitting position, fired on the AR-SR target; this stage will be fired in two series of 10 shots where shooters start from the standing position and have either 5 minutes (pneumatic air rifles) or 4 minutes (compressed air and CO2 air rifles) to assume firing positions and load and fire 10 shots. 2 sighting shots and 20 shots for record in the prone position, fired on the AR-MR target. To be eligible for NMAR Aggregate awards, competitors must fire both events with the same rifle.

  3. NMAR 80-Shot Aggregate. This is an 80-shot aggregate of scores fired in the Standing Course and Full Course events.

Additional details on NMAR courses of fire are found in the NMAR Rules that are posted on the CMP website at

http://odcmp.com/NMAR/Rules.pdf .

NEW SHOOTER CATEGORY. A “New Shooter” in this match is defined as anyone who has not previously fired in a sanctioned competition. New Shooters are encouraged to try NMAR, especially in the Sporter Class where loaner air rifles are available and where no special shooting equipment is required. In order to promote New Shooter participation, special awards will be given to the top Sporter Class New Shooters.

RANGE LOCATION—RANGE FACILITIES. The Lakeside Moose Family Center is located at 1207 Hilliard Rd, Richmond, VA 23228. Twelve firing points will be set up. Each firing point has a full-length air rifle backstop where two targets for each firing position are pinned on cardboard sheets at the proper height for each position. Shooters are encouraged to bring their own shooting mats and spotting scopes. Three relays of the 20-shot Standing Course and three relays of the 60-shot Full Course will be fired each day. Range capacity is 36 shooters per event per day with a total range capacity of 72 shooters. Shooters are encouraged to get their entries in early to ensure that entry space is available.

MATCH SCHEDULE. The match will be squadded with three relays for each event each day. Competitors should plan to arrive at the Moose Lodge one hour before their scheduled relay starts firing so that they can attend a 30-minute orientation prior to the start of their relay.

NMAR IS A SHOOTING DISCIPLINE YOU SHOULD TRY IF….If you belong to one of the groups described below and live in the Atlantic coast area, you should definitely consider attending the NMAR Season Opener Match at Richmond. NMAR could become your shooting game if you are a:

  • Highpower Rifle Shooter. If you are an active highpower or service rifle shooter, NMAR gives you a chance to practice the same skills with an air rifle during the offseason that you need to compete successfully with your highpower rifle during the summer outdoor season. In NMAR, you use an air rifle that looks and feels like your service or highpower rifle. You also use the same shooting jacket, sling and other equipment that are part of your highpower rifle gear.
  • Adult Air Rifle Shooter. If you are past junior or college age when you fired standing or three-position air rifle and want to continue competitive air rifle shooting, NMAR may be a great way to do that. In NMAR, you can use the same competition air rifle (precision or sporter) you used before, plus you will be shooting a three-position course of fire and targets that could get you involved in highpower rifle, the most popular rifle game in America. You can continue to use your shooting jacket, glove and sling, although special shooting trousers and shooting boots are not legal in NMAR.
  • New Shooter (ages 12-90).If you are a new or inexperienced shooter and are looking for a way to shoot for fun and recreation, NMAR should appeal to you. NMAR is a shooting discipline that features affordable equipment and easy-to-setup-ranges. No form of target shooting is cheaper or easier to start than air gun. If shooting for fun, keeping costs down and not having to buy a bunch of special equipment appeals to you, you should try the NMAR Sporter Class. NMAR is suited for shooters of almost all ages, from juniors who are able to safely handle an air rifle in three-position shooting to adult recreational shooters of all ages.
  • Club Leader. If you are a leader in a shooting club that is looking for a new shooting game to attract more fun-oriented or recreational participants and members or if your club is seeking a way to train highpower rifle shooters in the off-season or if your club wants a game to practice in the winter when outdoor shooting is impossible, you should come to Richmond on 27-28 February to try NMAR and learn how you can conduct NMAR matches at your shooting club.

NMAR RULES. NMAR competition rules are posted on the CMP web site at http://odcmp.com/NMAR/Rules.pdf . You can download and print your own copy of the rules from there. Printed copies of the rules will also be available at the match.

NMARTARGETS. The AR-SR target (200 yard highpower SR target reduced for 10 meters) is used for all NMAR standing and sitting (or kneeling) shooting. The AR-MR target (600 yard highpower MR target reduced for 10 meters) is used for prone position firing. Both of these targets are printed with 10 record bulls and two sighter bulls. The Krüger Company in Germany prints AR-SR and AR-MR targets on high-quality A-4 sized target paper for the CMP. Shooters who wish to obtain NMAR targets in advance to practice for this match may order these targets from the CMP. Open the CMP Target Sales Program information page at http://www.odcmp.com/Programs/targets.htm . For standing and sitting SR targets, order “Target A4-SR.” For prone MR targets, order “Target A4-MR.” Both targets cost $30.00 per pack of 250 targets, plus shipping.  The NMAR AR-SR target has ten record bulls and two sighter bulls. It is configured so that it can be scored with the Orion electronic scoring system.

SPECIAL FIRING PROCEDURES. Firing procedures in this match will follow NMAR rules, except that competitors will be allowed unlimited sighters in the standing and prone position stages as long as competitors complete their sighters and record shots within the 22-minute time limit. This is because many competitors in this match are expected to be firing loaner rifles. In the sitting or kneeling timed-fire stage, shooters begin with unloaded rifles in the standing position. However, CMP Competition Rule 9.1.9 will be applied. This rule allows new shooters, shooters 60 or older, or shooters who are unable to stand to start in position. They must keep the rifle out of their shoulder and may not load until the time starts and they may not fire the first shot until a shooter who was standing has fired.

CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT. Competitors who fire in the AR-Clone or Match Rifle Classes may wear shooting jackets, slings and other equipment that are legal according to CMP and NRA highpower rifle rules. Special shooting trousers or shooting shoes are not permitted. Competitors who fire in the Sporter Class may not wear special shooting clothing except the Basic Cloth Shooting Coat (item #827-B011 in the CMP Catalog or item B011 in the Creedmoor Sports Catalog) or the equivalent from other shooting equipment suppliers may be worn. Bring a spotting scope to spot your shots and zero if you have one. For new shooters, shooting mats and monoculars will be available for loan. Match grade pellets will be available for purchase at the range.

MANDATORY USE OF CLEAR BARREL INDICATORS (CBI). CMP Policy requires the use of safety flags in all rifles or pistols in CMP-sanctioned events. The CBI is a length of orange or red string trimmer line (weed trimmer cord) that is inserted through the bore, with ends that protrude from the muzzle and breech ends of the barrel. CBIs fulfill the same purpose that an ECI (Empty Chamber Indicator) does in highpower shooting; they provide visual confirmation that a rifle is cleared and unloaded. CBIs must be inserted after rifles are uncased and must remain in them at all times except during preparation and firing periods. CBIs must be reinserted as soon as a firing stage is completed (take care to wipe the CBI off before each use). CBIs will be available on the range.

AWARDS. Gold, Silver and Bronze CMP Achievement Award Pins will be presented according to the 2010 CMP Achievement Award schedule (to be released in January 2010). Gold, Silver and Bronze Medallions will be presented in each rifle class for the following events: Standing Course, Full Course, NMAR Aggregate, New Shooter. One medallion for every five competitors will be presented according to this schedule:

  • 5 or fewer competitors: 1 Bronze Medal
  • 5-10 competitors: 1 Bronze Medal, 1 Silver Medal
  • 11-15 competitors: 1 Bronze Medal, 1 Silver Medal, I Gold Medal
  • 16-20 competitors: 2 Bronze Medals, 1 Silver Medal, 1 Gold Medal
  • 21-25 competitors: 3 Bronze Medals, 1 Silver Medal, 1 Gold Medal
  • 26-30 competitors: 3 Bronze Medals, 2 Silver Medals, 1 Gold Medal
  • 31-36 competitors: 4 Bronze Medals, 2 Silver Medals, 1 Gold Medal

Food and Beverages will be available at the match. They will be provided by the Turkey Creek 4-H Shooting Education Club as a club fundraiser.
