Summer Shooting Opportunities for Youth

For many junior shooters, summer is the time to take a break from shooting. But for many other juniors, summer offers some of the best and most rewarding shooting opportunities of the whole year. Summer can be a time for national championships, junior shooting camps and several national junior invitational competitions. Without the time demands of school work, summer vacation periods offer more time to do extra training and have time to travel to other parts of the country to compete in the most important championships of the whole year. All of these opportunities can combine to raise shooting scores to a higher level and let young shooters experience some of the most enjoyable experiences in shooting.

Summer is a great time for juniors to attend competitions and get extra experience and practice.

2004 National Matches Entry Update.  Since on-line entries for the CMP National Trophy Matches opened three weeks ago, entries have been coming in at a very fast pace.  While many competitors are using the printed entry forms that were mailed one month ago, a majority of this year’s entries are coming in on-line.  The CMP’s Competition Tracker system makes it possible to take entries on-line, to manage entries and squadding and to post results on the Internet during the competitions.  With so many entries coming in earlier than in past years, the CMP already has started a waitlist for Springfield morning relay requests and expects to start waitlists for some other matches.  Pistol competitors still have five weeks to enter, Rimfire Sporter shooters have six weeks and highpower competitors have seven weeks, but with waitlist situations possible in some matches, it is important that everyone who wants to shoot in any National Matches events should get their entries in as soon as possible.  Here is an update on the entry status of the various National Matches events as of 8 June, after the first three weeks of entries were processed.  The CMP will continue to provide entry status updates until the matches begin.

· Pistol Small Arms Firing School, 205 entered, space available.

· Rifle Small Arms Firing School, 321 entered, space available.

· Rimfire Sporter Match, 60 entered, space available.

· USMC Junior Highpower Clinic, 54 entered, space available, but waitlist status may be required for late entries.

· Pistol National Trophy Matches, 201 entered, space available.

· Rifle - Springfield/Military Rifle Match, 424 entered, space available on afternoon relays, morning relay requests are going on waitlist.

· Rifle - Garand Match, 796 entered, about 150 spaces on morning relays remain, space available on afternoon relays.

· Rifle - M16 EIC Match, 306 entered, only 66 spaces remain until waitlist is started.

· Rifle - President’s Match - 567 entered, space available, but waitlist status is expected for late entries.

· Rifle - NTI, 549 entered, space available, but waitlist may be required for late entries.

To enter any National Matches events, go to the CMP Competition Tracker at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/matchUpcomingSearch.cgi.  Click on “Information” for the event you want to enter and follow the instructions.
