Text Box: Avid National Match Competitor Elected to U. S. Congress - Political office is not new territory for U. S. Congressman-Elect Bob Latta (R-Ohio). In fact, Latta has over 17 years of experience serving in various offices in his home county and in the Ohio State Senate and House of Representatives. Bob Latta, a dedicated gun enthusiast and outdoorsman, has almost as many years of experience as a National Matches competitor.

Text Box: In Memoriam.  James Kinkade, shooting instructor and long-time volunteer, passed away on 6 December at Colorado Springs while attending the 2007 CMP-USA Shooting-NRA Shooting Coach College and Conference.  Kinkade was a member of the CMP-USAS-NRA National Coach Development staff that trains shooting coaches who are certified through this program.  Kinkade was also the coach of a very successful club in Illinois called the Sandy Ford Junior Shooters.  Each summer he also volunteered a week of his time to help conduct the National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational.
 
In Memoriam.  Gertrude (Trude) Schlernitzauer earned U. S. Distinguished International Shooters Badge number 25 at the 38th World Shooting Championships in 1962.  She won a bronze medal there in the womens “rapid fire pistol” event to become one of the first four women to earn this prestigious badge.  She also won women’s national pistol championship titles at the National Matches in 1965, 1968 and 1969.  Trude Schlernitzauer passed away at her home in Michigan on 25 November at the age of 86.  Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the USA Shooting Team, 1 Olympic Plaza, Colorado Springs, CO 80909. 
 
The CMP extends its Congratulations to Shannon Hand and her family.  Shannon gave birth to four healthy babies on Sunday, 9 December; Madison Claire Hand, 5 lbs 5 oz, 18 inches long, born at 10:44, Everett Joseph Hand, 4 lbs 3 oz, 17 inches long, born at 10:46, Isabel Grace Hand, 5 lbs 8 oz, 19 ½ inches long, born at 10:47 and Olivia Justine, 4 lbs, 12 oz, 18 ½ inches long, born at 10:47, 50 sec.  Shannon works in the CMP Competition Department and handles the G-S-M Master Instruction Clinics, CMP Club Rifle and Pistol EIC matches, CMP Club Games Matches and Clinics and In-Processing for the National Matches.  To view photos, visit http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071213/NEWS17/712130365.

USA Shooting Names Athletes of the Year. . . USA Shooting (USAS) announced that 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Matthew Emmons and three-time Olympic Medalist Kimberly Rhode have been selected as the 2007 USAS Athletes of the Year.  These athletes were chosen based on the USAS Athlete of the Year Policies and Procedures and were selected by a points system.  Read this article at http://www.usashooting.com/viewRelease.php?id=82.
 
Linden Sportsmen on Target, Linden, Michigan - This past Sunday, December 2nd, The Linden Sportsmen Club held its annual fundraiser event for The Angel Tree/Christmas Express Program. The forecast called for cold, wind, snow and ice and the threat of bad weather did keep many shooters at home and held turn-out to a minimum. Text Box: Ground Breaking for New Camp Perry Indoor Range - On Friday, 14 December, Brigadier General Jack E. Lee, Deputy Commander, Joint Force Headquarters (Ohio), OH ARNG, joined Civilian Marksmanship Program Director Gary Anderson, and COL James Chisman, OH ARNG, Fort Ohio Installations Commander, in a ground breaking ceremony at Camp Perry for a new indoor range and marksmanship training facility. The Civilian Marksmanship Program is partnering with the Ohio National Guard in constructing the facility, which will provide expanded electronic skills training for National Guardsmen and an 80-point air gun range for CMP training and competition programs. Construction is starting this month and is scheduled for completion in June 2008.

Text Box: On 11 December 2007 a special election was held in Ohio to fill the seat of Rep. Paul E Gillmor (R), who passed away in September after a fall in his home. Latta, who was serving his fourth term in the Ohio House of Representatives at the time of the special election, won the election by a 57-43 margin and is now taking over the same Ohio 5th Congressional District Seat that his father, Del Latta (R), held from 1958 until 1988.

Text Box: CMP Appoints Two New State Junior Directors.  Linda Tucker, Mechanichsburg, Pennsylvania, and COL John Crossman USA (Ret.), Steilacoom, Washington, were recently appointed as new CMP State Junior Directors in their states.  Ms. Tucker will serve as a Co-Director with Erin Gestl in Pennsylvania.  Junior Directors are appointed to provide leadership, resource and program information, coordination, networking, motivation and publicity to strengthen and expand junior shooting programs in their states.  A complete list of CMP State Junior Directors with contact information is posted at http://www.odcmp.com/Programs/SJD.htm.  The CMP currently has Junior Director Vacancies in Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Montana and North Dakota.  Nominations or inquiries should be sent to Vicki Donoho at vdonoho@odcmp.com.
