2008 National Youth Shooting Sports Leadership Conference and Training Week

The 2008 Youth Leadership Conference will be hosted by the CMP, in cooperation with the NRA Education & Training Division and USA Shooting.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program, in cooperation with the NRA Education & Training Division and USA Shooting, will host the 2008 National Youth Shooting Sports Leadership Conference and Training Week at Camp Perry, Ohio. The program begins with advanced and basic coach and National Coach Development Staff training courses that begin on 20 September and continue through that week. The Youth Leadership Conference starts at 9:00 AM on Friday, 26 September, and continues through noon on Sunday, 28 September. The annual CMP State Junior Director Workshop takes place on Sunday afternoon, 28 September.

Brief descriptions of the training courses and conference activities follow. Fees cover course materials and some meals. Entry spaces in some courses are limited so all shooting coaches or junior leaders interested in attending any of the courses or the conference are encouraged to register early. We do reserve the right to cancel any course that does not reach minimum entry requirements. Anyone who wants additional information may contact Vicki Donoho at CMP, VDonoho@odcmp.com, 419-635-2141, ext. 1102; Marcus Raab at NRA, MRaab@nrahq.com, 703-267-1589 or Bob Foth at USA Shooting, Bob.Foth@usashooting.org 719-866-4881.

The lighthouse at the Camp Perry main gate that annually welcomes thousands of National Matches competitors will also welcome participants in the 2008 National Youth Shooting Sports Leadership Conference and Training Week.

BASIC COACHING COURSES.  There will be three different Basic Coaching Courses offered on 23-24 September. Basic coaching course students should plan to arrive on 22 September. Courses will be offered for rifle, pistol, and shotgun (if there is enough interest)*. Students must select one course due to the courses being taught simultaneously. There are no pre-requisites for the basic coach courses, other than having a good knowledge of the shooting sports and marksmanship safety. The fee for each of the basic coach courses is $130. This fee covers course materials and breakfast and lunch on 23-24 September. *Please remember that if there are not enough people to meet the minimum requirements any of the classes may be cancelled.

ADVANCED COACHING COURSES.  Two advanced coaching courses, one in rifle and one in pistol, will be taught on Tuesday thru Thursday, 23-25 September. Students for either of the courses should plan to arrive at Camp Perry on Monday, 22 September. These courses are structured to meet the advanced training requirements of experienced, certified shooting coaches. Those wishing to attend must be Certified Coaches in the discipline they select. The tuition for the advanced coaching courses is $170. The fee covers course materials along with breakfast and lunch for the three days during the course.

NATIONAL COACH DEVELOPMENT STAFF (NCDS) COURSE. The National Coach Development Staff Course requires an invitation to attend. Pre-requisites include Level 2 Coach Certification, current First Aid certification, and ASEP. This course will begin on Saturday, 20 September. Those attending should plan to arrive on Friday, 19 September or no later than noon on Saturday. The course will run through the 24th, with students of the course teaching during the basic courses offered on the 23rd and 24th. The actual cost for the course is free, however there is a $60 fee that will cover breakfast and lunch from the 21st-24th. If interested in taking this course, please contact Marcus Raab at MRaab@nrahq.com or 703-267-1589 for more details.

The 2008 Youth Leadership Conference and Training Week offers a series of training courses and instructional presentations that will help junior leaders and coaches work more effectively with youth in their programs.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE. The National Youth Shooting Sports Leadership Conference is part of a two-year cycle of major fall training conferences that are co-hosted by the NRA, USA Shooting and the CMP. USA Shooting hosts the National Coaches College at the Olympic Training Center in odd-numbered years, while the CMP hosts the Leadership Conference in even-numbered years. The two and one-half day Leadership Conference focuses on developing more knowledgeable and effective junior team and club leaders who can better serve and train junior shooters in their communities. Its fundamental objective is to stimulate the growth of junior shooting.

Conference attendees should check in on Thursday afternoon or evening, 25 September and there will be a get-acquainted reception that evening. The 2008 conference officially starts at 9:00 AM on Friday morning, 26 September. Conference attendees will be invited to shoot in a special Air Rifle Sporter Match on the new Camp Perry Competition center electronic range. Daisy 853 sporter rifles will be provided for Conference attendees. There will be a full program of presentations and small group sessions focusing on coaching, shooting techniques and junior program organization on 26-28 September. Author and coach Ralf Horneber, Sport Director of the Bavarian Sport Shooting Federation, will be a featured presenter plus there will be insider reports from the 2008 Olympic Games shooting in Beijing. A detailed conference schedule will be released soon. In addition to returning home with new ideas, inspiration and resources, conference attendees have many opportunities to network with youth shooting sports leaders from all over the country. The conference fee is $90. Attendees receive conference materials along with breakfast and lunch for the three days and a cookout one night. This fee does not include housing—see “Housing” below for how to make housing arrangements.

CMP STATE JUNIOR DIRECTORS WORKSHOP. The program concludes with the annual training workshop for CMP State Junior Directors on Sunday afternoon, 28 September. The SJD Workshop provides briefings on CMP youth and other programs. This conference is attended by all current State Junior Directors, but it is open to other interested persons.

The 2008 Youth Leadership Conference will include an opportunity for all attendees to shoot a Sporter Air Rifle Match on the new electronic range. Rifles and ammunition will be available for attendees.

CONFERENCE AND TRAINING LEADERS. Coach course instruction will be provided by the National Coach Development staff that is coordinated by the NRA Education & Training Division. Youth Leadership Conference presentations will be made by some of the top shooting coaches in the country and technical experts in the country as well as by CMP, NRA and USA Shooting staff members. CMP State Junior Directors and National Coach Development Staff from throughout the country provide a tremendous wealth of additional knowledge and experience to benefit other Conference attendees.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND. Any one who serves as a leader, coach, instructor or active parent in a high school or junior shooting program can benefit from the training courses and conference presentations. If you work with junior shooters and want to grow and improve your program, you belong at the 2008 National Youth Shooting Sports Leadership Conference and Training Week.

HOUSING. Housing is not included in the Conference or Coaches Course registration fees, but Camp Perry on-post housing arrangements can be made by calling Vicki Donoho at 419-635-2141 ext 1102. Housing at Camp Perry will be in modules (motel-type rooms). Modules have two twin beds and a shared bathroom. The price for two people per night is $45.00; if you are traveling by yourself a roommate can be assigned so the cost would be $22.50 a night. Attendees may also make their own housing arrangements at nearby motels in the Port Clinton area.

SPOUSE/VISITOR FEE. For those wishing to come along, but who are not participating in any of the classes or the conference, they may pay a fee of $15.00 per day for meals (breakfast and lunch) at Camp Perry. Tickets for the Friday evening cookout at Camp Perry are also $15.00. Please call Vicki Donoho at 419-635-2141 ext. 1102 if you are interested so we make sure we have enough food. Housing arrangements will have the same pricing as those attending the courses. Payment of these fees may be made when you arrive at Camp Perry.
