The M1 Carbine was designed primarily to offer noncombat and line-of-communications troops a better defensive weapon than a pistol or submachinegun, with greater accuracy and range, but without the recoil, cost, or weight of a full-power infantry rifle. The carbine was also easier for less experienced soldiers and smaller-framed people to fire than the .30 caliber infantry rifles of the day. The carbine was more convenient to carry for officers, NCOs, or specialists encumbered with weapons, field glasses, radios, or other gear. Tankers, drivers, artillery crews, mortar crews, and other personnel were also issued the M1 Carbine in lieu of the larger, heavier M1 Garand. Belatedly, a folding-stock version of the M1 Carbine was developed, after a request was made for a compact and light infantry arm for airborne troops. The first M1 Carbines were delivered in mid-1942, with initial priority given to troops in the European theatre of war.

Each M1 Carbine rifle sold by CMP is an authentic U.S. Government rifle that has been inspected, headspaced, repaired if necessary and test fired for function. M1 Carbine Barreled Receiver

M1 Carbine, stripped barrel and stripped receiver only. Rack grade, no bolt or other parts should be expected with this option. These are not sorted by manufacturer and selection of manufacturer is luck of the draw. Bores may have some heavy pitting and exterior finish may show significant wear adn some surface pitting and rust. Muzzle will gauge over a three (3) on gauge. Metal may have some foreign markings. These barreled receivers are what remains from the last few years of carbine inspection and repair. We do not have any reason to believe we will receive any additional carbines. Many of our customers would consider these barreled receivers "JUNK". NO REFUNDS AND NO EXCHANGES. $125 plus $12.95 S&H per barreled receiver.

** "BAVARIA MARKED" CARBINES **
In the months after the end of WWII, the Allied Occupation Forces needed the assistance of the German police to maintain order and enforce the laws pertaining to the German population. In October 1945 the Allied Control Council for Germany issued a directive that allowed for rearming the German police. The directive required the weapons they were armed with must not be of German manufacture, and must be marked in a manner that would make the weapons readily identifiable as to which agency they were issued.

Office of Military Government Bavaria ordered their M1 Carbines to be marked in English on top of the receiver to the left of the bolt, with the type of agency the weapon was issued too; BAVARIA RURAL POLICE, BAVARIA FORESTRY POLICE, BAVARIA BORDER POLICE, BAVARIA GAME WARDEN, BAVARIA PRISON GUARD, and BAVARIA MUNICIPAL POLICE.

Bavaria-Marked M1 Carbines

Austrian (LGK) Markings: Between 1955 and 1957 Austria received thousands of U.S. M1 carbines from the American Military Assistance Program. Austria divided these carbines between the Bundesheer (military), Bundespolizei, and Gendarmerie (rural police). Only the Gendarmerie marked them, on the bottom of the trigger housings using the letters LGK to identify the Gendarmerie command, along with one or two letters that identified the Austrian State that they were issued too (e.g. LGKV, LGKK, LGKT, LGKST, etc). The Gendarmerie also purchased thousands of carbines from the German state of Bavaria.

** M1A1 PARATROOPER CARBINES **
The CMP has a acquired a relatively small quantity of M1A1 paratrooper
carbines. Approximately 140,000 of these carbines were made by Inland from
late 1942 to late 1944. They are quite scarce today and original examples
have not been offered for sale for several decades.

While these carbines have been inspected and are complete and serviceable,
they have seen considerable use over the past 60+ years. Many show stock
repairs and signs of refinishing and rebuilding. Leather may be scuffed or
may be torn. Wire stocks may have replaced leather or rivets.

All of these carbines have Inland barreled receivers. Most have Inland bolts
but will have mixed USGI parts. None have the early flip sights, and late
features will predominate. Bores are free of pits and gauge under "3" on a
muzzle gauge. Most of these carbines are still coated in grease or other
preservative and will require a thorough cleaning.
