MARKINGS INFORMATION
REAR SIGHT - ZEROING PROBLEMS
The M1 Carbine was designed primarily to offer noncombat and line-of-communications troops a better defensive weapon than a pistol or submachine gun, with greater accuracy and range, but without the recoil, cost, or weight of a full-power infantry rifle. The carbine was also easier for less experienced soldiers and smaller-framed people to fire than the .30 caliber infantry rifles of the day. The carbine was more convenient to carry for officers, NCOs, or specialists encumbered with weapons, field glasses, radios, or other gear. Tankers, drivers, artillery crews, mortar crews, and other personnel were also issued the M1 Carbine in lieu of the larger, heavier M1 Garand. Belatedly, a folding-stock version of the M1 Carbine was developed, after a request was made for a compact and light infantry arm for airborne troops. The first M1 Carbines were delivered in mid-1942, with initial priority given to troops in the European theatre of war.
Each M1 Carbine rifle sold by CMP is an authentic U.S. Government rifle that has been inspected, headspaced, repaired if necessary and test fired for function. Each rifle is shipped with safety manual and chamber safety flag. Shipping and Handling $24.95 per rifle. NOTE: Carbines are not sold or shipped with magazines.
NOTE: CMP HAS ALMOST COMPLETELY SOLD OUT OF CARBINES. THE ONLY OPTIONS REMAINING ARE SHOWN BELOW. WE DO NOT EXPECT TO RECEIVE ANY ADDITIONAL SHIPMENTS.

| R017BRZ | M1 Carbine Receiver and Barrel Only - see description below | SOLD OUT NOT ACCEPTING ORDERS |
M1 Carbine, stripped barrel and stripped receiver only. Rack grade, no bolt or other parts should be expected with this option. These are not sorted by manufacturer and selection of manufacturer is luck of the draw. Bores may have some heavy pitting and exterior finish may show significant wear and some surface pitting and rust. Muzzle will gauge over a three (3) on gauge. Metal may have some foreign markings. These barreled receivers are what remains from the last few years of carbine inspection and repair. We do not have any reason to believe we will receive any additional carbines. Many of our customers would consider these barreled receivers "JUNK". NO REFUNDS AND NO EXCHANGES. $125 plus $12.95 S&H per barreled receiver.
** "Bavaria Marked" Carbines **
In the months after the end of WWII, the Allied Occupation Forces needed the assistance of the German police to maintain order and enforce the laws pertaining to the German population. In October 1945 the Allied Control Council for Germany issued a directive that allowed for rearming the German police. The directive required the weapons they were armed with must not be of German manufacture, and must be marked in a manner that would make the weapons readily identifiable as to which agency they were issued.
Office of Military Government Bavaria ordered their M1 Carbines to be marked in English on top of the receiver to the left of the bolt, with the type of agency the weapon was issued too; BAVARIA RURAL POLICE, BAVARIA FORESTRY POLICE, BAVARIA BORDER POLICE, BAVARIA GAME WARDEN, BAVARIA PRISON GUARD, and BAVARIA MUNICIPAL POLICE.

Further information in regards to the history of the Bavarian carbines can be found at can be found here: http://www.bavarianm1carbines.com/cmp.html

Austrian (LGK) Markings: Between 1955 and 1957 Austria received thousands of U.S. M1 carbines from the American Military Assistance Program. Austria divided these carbines between the Bundesheer (military), Bundespolizei, and Gendarmerie (rural police). Only the Gendarmerie marked them, on the bottom of the trigger housings using the letters LGK to identify the Gendarmerie command, along with one or two letters that identified the Austrian State that they were issued too (e.g. LGKV, LGKK, LGKT, LGKST, etc). The Gendarmerie also purchased thousands of carbines from the German state of Bavaria.
While these carbines have been inspected and are complete and serviceable, they have seen considerable use over the past 60+ years. Many show stock repairs and signs of refinishing and rebuilding. Leather may be scuffed or may be torn. Wire stocks may have replaced leather or rivets.
All of these carbines have Inland barreled receivers. Most have Inland bolts but will have mixed USGI parts. None have the early flip sights, and late features will predominate. Bores are free of pits and gauge under "3" on a muzzle gauge. Most of these carbines are still coated in grease or other preservative and will require a thorough cleaning.
Because of their scarcity, these carbines will be offered for sale through our auction site at http://cmpauction.spadra.com/index.asp.
The carbines have been all been graded as service grade and separated into three categories:
| ITEM # | DESCRIPTION | PRICE | AVAILABILITY |
| ____ | M1A1 High Wood | CMP AUCTION ONLY | |
| ____ | M1A1 Low Wood | CMP AUCTION ONLY | |
| ____ | M1A1 European Wood | CMP AUCTION ONLY |
Low Wood USGI (dark walnut). Some may be cut down from high wood. Most will have stock repairs such as screws, pins or patched wood. Wire stock is USGI.
High Wood USGI (dark walnut). Most will have stock repairs such as screws, pins or patched wood. Wire stock is USGI.
European Wood (replacement). Wood is light tan in color, resembling beechwood. All are low wood profile and most are in excellent condition. A few may have stock repairs. Wire stock is USGI.

The U.S. M1903 and M1903A3 “Springfield” rifles are the greatest of all U.S. military issue bolt action rifles. This series of rifles was originally issued to the many proud and selfless Americans that answered freedom’s call during World War I, World War II, and the Korean War.
The rifles continued to serve as ceremonial rifles by veterans’ organizations such as the VFW, AL, DAV and many others. We are pleased to offer these rifles for sale exclusively to members of CMP affiliated organizations.
These rifles have all seen considerable use. All have been rebuilt at one time or another and should be considered “mix-masters” as they have parts from all manufacturers. These rifles are all returns from veterans’ organizations. Complete rifles are functional. Appearance and overall exterior condition varies from fair to good, except for the barrels. These rifles have been used for ceremonial purposes for decades and probably have fired thousands of blank rounds. Bores may be dark with little or no rifling, pitting, and rust. Wood is sound, but may have minor cracks, dents, scratches and gouges that do not affect function. Metal finish may be worn in spots and minor pitting may be present.
PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT EXPECT TO EVER AGAIN RECEIVE LARGE QUANTITIES OF THESE MODELS.
M1903*
WARNING ON “LOW-NUMBER” SPRINGFIELDS
M1903 rifles made before February 1918 utilized receivers and bolts which were single heat-treated by a method that rendered some of them brittle and liable to fracture when fired, exposing the shooter to a risk of serious injury. It proved impossible to determine, without destructive testing, which receivers and bolts were so affected and therefore potentially dangerous.
To solve this problem, the Ordnance Department commenced double heat treatment of receivers and bolts. This was commenced at Springfield Armory at approximately serial number 800,000 and at Rock Island Arsenal at exactly serial number 285,507. All Springfields made after this change are commonly called “high number” rifles. Those Springfields made before this change are commonly called “low-number” rifles.
In view of the safety risk the Ordnance Department withdrew from active service all “low-number” Springfields. During WWII, however, the urgent need for rifles resulted in the rebuilding and reissuing of many “low-number” as well as “high-number” Springfields. The bolts from such rifles were often mixed during rebuilding, and did not necessarily remain with the original receiver.
Generally speaking, “low number” bolts can be distinguished from “high-number” bolts by the angle at which the bolt handle is bent down. All “low number” bolts have the bolt handle bent straight down, perpendicular to the axis of the bolt body. High number bolts have “swept-back” (or slightly rearward curved) bolt handles.
A few straight-bent bolts are of the double heat-treat type, but these are not easily identified, and until positively proved otherwise ANY straight-bent bolt should be assumed to be “low number”. All original swept-back bolts are definitely “high number”. In addition, any bolt marked “N.S.” (for nickel steel) can be safely regarded as “high number” if obtained directly from CMP (beware of re-marked fakes).
CMP DOES NOT RECOMMEND FIRING ANY SPRINGFIELD RIFLE WITH A ”LOW NUMBER” RECEIVER. Such rifles should be regarded as collector’s items, not “shooters”.
CMP ALSO DOES NOT RECOMMEND FIRING ANY SPRINGFIELD RIFLE, REGARDLESS OF SERIAL NUMBER, WITH A SINGLE HEAT-TREATed “LOW NUMBER” BOLT. SUCH BOLTS, WHILE HISTORICALLY CORRECT FOR DISPLAY WITH A RIFLE OF WWI OR EARLIER VINTAGE, MAY BE DANGEROUS TO USE FOR SHOOTING.
THE UNITED STATES ARMY GENERALLY DID NOT SERIALIZE BOLTS. DO NOT RELY ON ANY SERIAL NUMBER APPEARING ON A BOLT TO DETERMINE WHETHER SUCH BOLT IS “HIGH NUMBER” OR “LOW NUMBER”.
The M1917 Enfield, "P17 Enfield", "American Enfield", formally named "United States Rifle, cal .30, Model of 1917" was an American modification and production of the British .303 caliber P14 rifle developed and manufactured during the period 1917-1918.
When the British Empire entered World War I, it had an urgent need for rifles and contracts were placed with companies in the United States. In the case of the P14 rifle, Winchester and Remington were selected. When the U.S. entered the war, it had a similar extreme need for rifles. Rather than re-tool completely, the factories, under the close supervision of the US Army Ordnance Department, altered the design for caliber .30-06. Winchester produced the rifle at their New Haven, Connecticut plant and Remington at their main facility at Ilion, New York and at another plant in Eddystone, Pennsylvania.
* The CMP continues to receive a few dozen of these rifles each year. All of these rifles have been on loan from the U.S. Army to chartered veterans' organizations for use in honor guards, funerals, and other ceremonial purposes. All are mix-masters and none are in original condition. We receive only a few of this model each year, and in overall poor condition. All sales are AS-IS with NO RETURNS OR EXCHANGES.
SERVICE GRADE: Rifle functions. Barrels may be dark and may have rust or pitting and little rifling. Wood is sound but does show normal wear. Metal may show normal wear and may exhibit some rust or pitting. Rifle has been head spaced and test fired.

Wood may have heavy cracks, dings, dents, gouges. May or may not headspace. Rifle is chrome plated or painted, could have painted stocks. Rifle has not been test fired.
DRILL RIFLE: Rifle has plugged and welded barrel and other welded parts. Small parts may be missing. Wood may have cracks, dings, dents. Rifle could be painted or chromed.

Sporter Air Rifles
The largest and fastest-growing segment of junior shooting today uses a class of target air rifles called “sporter air rifles.” Sporter air rifles now constitute a special class of junior shooting competition that offers excellent opportunities for new junior shooters. Sporter air rifles are characterized by their light weight (5-7 lbs.), low cost (they vary from $180 to $500 in cost), basic target features (adjustable sights, adjustable length stocks, adjustable sling attachments) and suitable accuracy (rifles sold through this program must be capable of consistently shooting tens on the standard competition targets).
Three-position air rifle shooting is promoted and governed by the National Three-Position Air Rifle Council whose members include The American Legion, Army Cadet Command (JROTC), Boy Scouts of America Venturing, Civilian Marksmanship Program, Daisy/U. S. Jaycee Shooter Education Program, Marine Corps Training and Education Command (MCJROTC), National 4-H Shooting Sports, National Guard Marksmanship Training Center, Naval Education and Training Command (NJROTC) and USA Shooting (Olympic shooting governing body). The NRA also independently promotes three-position air rifle competitions. One of two classes of competition offered in three-position air rifle programs is for sporter class rifles. Junior shooters can begin competing within their first year of shooting in competitions limited to sporter class air rifles. Most juniors in this class are newer shooters who benefit most by competing with other juniors at a similar level of development. Sporter competitions range from local tournaments to national championships sponsored by USA Shooting (Junior Olympic National Championship), The American Legion, Daisy and the National Guard Marksmanship Training Center.
The major advantages of sporter air rifles are their affordable price and the fact that expensive target shooting clothing or other equipment is not required or even permitted. New youth shooting groups can readily afford to participate in sporter class competitions. In addition, many parents of youth interested in target shooting are willing to spend $175 to $500 to purchase sporter class rifles, but would not spend $1,000 or $2,000 to buy a precision-class target air rifle and the special equipment needed in that class of competition. Sporter air rifles, with their low cost, light weight, adjustable length stocks and outstanding accuracy, have proven themselves to be a perfect solution to the need for a target rifle that is suitable for new and developing junior shooters.

Customer Comment - please read:
Date: Sat, 26 Apr 2008
I purchased several of the "Krag parade rifles" last year that were turn-ins from vet groups. Although you have listed most of the problems associated with these turn-ins, I would like to clarify two areas. The first is that on the full length military stock parade rifle, it wasn't really full length but had been cut back when they removed the front sight. Anyone planning on purchasing just for the stock should be made aware of this as, even the "carbine" stocks, weren't really "carbine" stocks but cutoffs. The second thing is the barrels on all the Krags I bought had the chamber reamed out. This could be a dangerous situation if the individual chambered a round, fired it upward, it could actually fire, but suspect a lot of damage to gun and person would occur. It should be inspected thoroughly to make sure that they didn't ream out the chamber to much and ruin the receiver.
Mine were chromed and that is also a negative for restoration. I ended up leaving all but one the way they were as they do make nice displays. Of course yours may be different, but I think the standard procedures for deactivating all the Krags given to Vet groups had the firing pin broke off, barrel chamber reamed out, front sight removed and cut back along with shortening the full stocks. A new firing pin, barrel and front sight would restore these, but in the long run it would be cheaper just to buy the correct Krag. Hope some of this information is helpful. Good luck Monday as I suspect you will be buried in orders again on the M-1 carbine. Mine will be in the pile somewhere!!!!! You all are appreciated. Thanks. G.H.B.

We have recently come into possession of a few hundred more of these barrels and are offering them for sale. These barrels are mounted on M1903A3 receivers. Most of them appear to be unused, but all show some wear and tear on outside surfaces.
