Text Box: NEWS FROM THE CMP

New CMP National Matches Poster.  Wyoming artist Jerry Antolik has just completed another oil painting featuring several recent prominent National Matches images.  The new painting will be placed on display at the CMP Camp Perry office.  Posters produced from the original oil painting are now on sale at the CMP Store at Camp Perry.  The 19.5” x 25.75” posters cost $12.95 each.  The posters will also be available through the CMP E-Store within the next few days.  Images featured on the painting and poster include 7-time national pistol champion Gy. Sgt. Brian Zins shooting a 9mm service pistol, SSgt Jerome Bostick, the leading service rifle shooter in the 2003 National Trophy Matches, smallbore and air rifle competitors, two Distinguished badges and the 1971 highpower offhand national record target fired by Gary Anderson.

National Matches Update.  The pistol phase of the 2004 National Matches is already over; the smallbore rifle phase ends this week and the highpower rifle phase begins on the 1st of August with the Rifle Small Arms Firing School and CMP National Trophy Rifle Matches.  Registrations in the Rifle SAFS now exceed 2003 registrations, which were the highest in many years.  Entries in the National Trophy Rifle Matches continue to run well ahead of last year’s entries.  The new M16 EIC Match, Springfield Match and John C. Garand Matches are all essentially full.  However, with a normal number of cancellations coming in, a few entry spots continue to open.  The Presidents and National Trophy Individual Matches both have small numbers of openings.  Shooters who want to compete in these matches still have a chance to get in.  Enter as soon as possible on-line at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/matchUpcomingSearch.cgi.  Select the event(s) you want to enter and then follow instructions to register.  If an event is full or waitlisted, you will be contacted as soon as your entry is received.

Distinguished Badge Records.  The CMP has now compiled a complete list of all Distinguished Badge winners in all three Distinguished categories, service rifle, service pistol and international.  Updated lists are posted on the CMP Competitor Tracker home page at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/report_distinguished.cgi.  The CMP invites all Distinguished badge holders to check these listings to make sure they are correct.  The Distinguished listing records the year the badge was earned, any military affiliation or rank that applied at the time the badge was earned and the badge number.  Distinguished shooters who wish to submit updated information are urged to contact the CMP at competitions@odcmp.com.

Quantico Service Rifle Scores.  SGT Richard Zolnowsky of the All National Guard Service Rifle Team won the Individual Service Rifle Championship at Quantico, Virginia last week with a score of 993 with 49 Xs out of a possible 1000 points.  SGT Zolnowsky recently returned from an 18 month rotation that included a year-long tour in Iraq and had minimal preparation for the event.  This is the first time since 1982 that the National Guard has taken this honor over all of the U.S. Services represented at this event.  SPC Lee Jenks from the All Guard Team was second in the event with a score of 991.  During the Quantico Highpower Regional, the U. S. Army Infantry Trophy Team fired an all-time high 1503 score.  A few days later in the Inter-Service Matches, the same Army team shot a 1506 Infantry Team score.

New Shooter on Two Winning National Trophy Teams.  MSG Doug Morrison, NCOIC of the USAR Service Rifle Team reports that CW4 A. Bryan Wood was the NEW SHOOTER on the USAR Pistol Team that won the 2004 National Trophy Pistol Team Match (Gold Cup) at Camp Perry and that the same CW4 A. Bryan Wood was the NEW SHOOTER on the USAR Service Rifle Team that won the National Trophy Rifle Team Match (Dogs of War National Trophy) at Camp Perry in 1992.  He is trying to find out if anyone else has ever been the NEW SHOOTER on teams that won both the National Trophy Pistol and Rifle Team Matches.  Contact celder@odcmp.com.

Pistol Competitor Killed in Tragic Accident
Returning Home from Camp Perry

In a community as large as the competitive shooting family that comes to the National Matches at Camp Perry every year, tragedies that strike one of their members are always hard to take.  On Wednesday, July 21st, Ken Saucier, a pistol shooter, Seattle Police Officer and father, died in a single-car accident in Northern Idaho.  Mr. Saucier was en route home to Seattle after attending the 2004 National Pistol Matches at Camp Perry.

Rimfire Sporter Story

For shooters new to the competition world, coming to Camp Perry can be daunting.  Many think that you have to be a potential national champion to compete here.  However, nothing could be farther from the truth.  To encourage more people to try target shooting and come to the National Matches, the CMP created the Rimfire Sporter Match in 2002.  On July 24th, 143 Rimfire Sporter shooters experienced why Camp Perry is considered one of the most challenging places to shoot in the United States – wind!

Camp Perry Eagles Update - The pair of eagles that nest on Camp Perry have become well-known to the shooters who come to the National Matches.  Last year, the pair fledged two young eagles that frequently flew over the ranges and occasionally caused “cease fires” long enough for Camp Perry Range Operations staff to chase them out of harms way in the range impact areas.  The Camp Perry eagles hatched one new eaglet this year that was banded by Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife staff on May 28, 2004.
