CMP Update 12/23/02

The Civilian Marksmanship Program will be closed on Christmas Day and New Years Day for the Holidays.

*********************************************************

http://www.odcmp.com/Services/STORE.htm

The CMP North Store has a webpage that visitors can refer to before traveling to Camp Perry to purchase at the store.  This page will list the store hours of operation and items that can be found in the store.

*********************************************************

CMP stops accepting orders for R002WRA - Danish M1 Garand Service Grade, Winchester. We currently have over 500 backorders for this item. At the rate we have been finding them, expected delivery times for additional orders would be approximately 2-3 years. CMP will discontinue accepting orders for this option until the backlog has been significantly reduced.

CMP Update 12-18-02

A MESSAGE FROM CMP HEADQUARTERS--TO CMP CLUB OFFICIALS, COMPETITORS, COACHES AND FRIENDS:

During this holiday season, all of us on the CMP staff extend our best wishes to all of you who have supported CMP programs and activities throughout the past year.  As the year ends, we also would like to release some special announcements regarding CMP programs.

CMP NEWS.  If you are not already familiar with it, we want to call your attention to the “CMP News” articles that we post in the CMP on-line magazine, THE FIRST SHOT.  This month’s edition is found at http://www.odcmp.org/1102/default.asp?page=CMP_News.  One of the best ways to stay up to date on CMP activities is to check that article in each month’s FIRST SHOT.

OTTAWA COUNTY TORNADO RELIEF.  Many National Matches competitors and friends of Camp Perry have already sent in donations to assist victims of the tornadoes that slashed across Ottawa County, Ohio, the home of Camp Perry and the National Matches, in November.  We plan to turn all of these checks over to the Ottawa County Red Cross before the end of the year.  Anyone who would still like to donate to this fund should make out a donation check to:  OTTAWA COUNTY RED CROSS TORNADO RELIEF FUND.  Checks should not be made out to the CMP.  Send donation checks to: CMP, Attn: DCM Admin. Assistant, P O Box 576, Port Clinton, Ohio 43452.

VOLUNTEER TARGET SCORERS NEEDED.  The CMP is responsible for conducting several large national air rifle postal competitions that involve thousands of junior shooters and tens of thousands of targets.  To score these targets, the CMP is organizing a large “scoring party” at Camp Perry, Ohio during the week of 20-26 January 2003.  We still need eight additional volunteer target scorers who can come to Camp Perry that week and who are willing to work as target scorers throughout the week.  The CMP will provide housing and meals, but not transportation.  The work promises to be intense, enjoyable and rewarding for anyone willing to help with this important project.  Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Christie Sewell, 419-635-2141, ext. 1112 or competitions@odcmp.com.

HOST CLUBS FOR 2003 RIMFIRE SPORTER MATCHES SOUGHT.  The CMP inaugurated an exciting new recreation-oriented target game in 2002 when CMP Rimfire Sporter Rifle Matches were conducted at Camp Perry, during the National Matches, and at Wolf Creek in Atlanta.   These matches have been called the “Garand Matches of rimfire shooting.”  In 2003, the CMP plans to expand the number of national-level Rimfire Sporter Rifle Matches by conducting five “CMP Centennial Series Rimfire Sporter Matches” at host clubs throughout the country.  To host one of these matches, clubs must have a minimum of 40 covered 50-yard firing points and be willing to provide five or six volunteers to assist with the competition.  The CMP will provide the Match Director to conduct a clinic and the competition, as well as the targets, achievement medals and participant’s T-shirts.  Any club that is interested in hosting a CMP Centennial Series Rimfire Sporter Rifle Match should contact Christie Sewell, 419-635-2141, ext. 1112 or competitions@odcmp.com.  The reward for participating clubs will be having an opportunity to give recreation-oriented shooters in your area a new competition and to assist in developing this exciting form of competitive shooting.

CMP SANCTIONED MATCHES.  In addition to these Centennial Series Rimfire Matches, any affiliated club can now conduct its own Rimfire Sporter Match that is sanctioned by the CMP.  In 2003, the CMP will sanction Club Garand Matches, Springfield Matches, Vintage Military Rifle Matches and Rimfire Sporter Matches.  The CMP match sanctioning program will feature several changes that will go into effect in 2003.  There will be a basic $20 match-sanctioning fee for CMP-Sanctioned Garand, Springfield, Vintage Military Rifle and Rimfire Sporter Matches.  Match sponsors will be able to purchase special award pins that they can present at their matches to recognize the same achievement levels that are rewarded with medallions at the National Garand, Springfield and Rimfire Sporter Matches.  For more information on CMP sanctioned matches, contact Christie Sewell.

RIFLE CLINICS.  The CMP Training Department still has a few weekends open on his schedule during the months of January-April and September-December when he can conduct “Pairs Clinics” in smallbore or air rifle target shooting for junior/adult (coach or parent) combinations.  These clinics have a flexible schedule, but generally start on Friday evening and end on Sunday afternoon.  Any team or club that is interested in scheduling a clinic should contact the CMP Training Department at (419) 635-2141, ext. 1109.

CMP AND NATIONAL MATCHES CENTENNIALS.  In 2003, we will celebrate the 100th anniversaries of the founding of the Civilian Marksmanship Program and the National Matches.  We are developing a CMP centennial logo and will have special merchandise and competition awards available with this logo during the year.  We’re also commissioning a centennial poster that should be an attractive addition to your clubhouse, range or gunroom.  Special centennial observances will take place during the First Shot Ceremony on 14 July and at the end of the National Trophy Rifle Matches on 9 August.  Put those dates on your calendars if you can be at Camp Perry then.

Here are some additional announcements that will be of special interest to CMP-affiliated clubs:

  1. Annual Statistical Reports that CMP-affiliated clubs must complete in the first three months of the year to renew their affiliations will be distributed during the first part of January.  CMP club contacts who provided email addresses can expect to receive Annual Report Notices via email and will be able to file reports on-line on the CMP website.

  2. Smallbore ammunition prices will go up this year.  Starting on the first of January, clubs that receive allocated smallbore ammo or that purchase additional smallbore ammo at club prices will have to pay shipping charges in addition to the cost of the ammo.  6,500 rounds of .22 cal. training-grade ammo will still cost $95.00, but an additional $27.50 in shipping costs will be charged.  Shipping charges will also be added to the cost of commercial center-fire ammunition that clubs order from CMP.  This increase was necessitated by increased charges from the company that supplies this ammo to CMP.  The costs to clubs for air rifle pellets or BBs are expected to remain about the same as last year.

  3. The price paid by affiliated clubs to purchase .30 Cal. Carbines was recently lowered from $500 per rifle to $350 per rifle.

  4. The prices clubs or junior teams pay for the Feinwerkbau P70 Junior precision air rifles will increase from $680 to $725 per rifle on the 1st of January.

Holiday greetings to all of you--have a great year of shooting in 2003!

Gary Anderson, Director of Civilian Marksmanship

Effective February 1, 2003 CMP will increase Shipping & Handling charges for rifles by $1.00 to $20.95 per rifle. S&H charges for ammunition and other items will remain the same until March 1, 2003. This change reflects some of the increased costs the CMP has absorbed for the past three years.

CMP News

The Civilian Marksmanship Program is honored to be awarded "Business of the Year" and "Outstanding Business Award" by the Ottawa County Improvement Corporation.

Due to severe storms and a tornado in the area on the night of November 9th, internet service was interrupted in the Port Clinton, Ohio area until November 11th, affecting the operation of the CMP website. We apologize for any inconvenience this interruption may have caused. Our website is again up and running to assist you. While, the town of Port Clinton suffered some severe damage, thankfully, no major injuries to the citizens were reported and Camp Perry was also unscathed.

M1903 and M1903A3. When CMP received these rifles earlier this year, we notified all 14,000 customers who had previously submitted names to our 1903 lottery of the availability of the 1903s and offered them the first opportunity to purchase. Because many of the options had relatively small quantities, we limited customers to no more than one rifle per option.  The initial rush has been satisfied and we do not have any 1903 or 1903A3 orders on backorder.  We do still have a large number of these rifles available and ready to ship.  We had sold out of some options, but additional quantities for some of those sold out options have become available. Rifles have been inspected and are ready to ship, with an estimated delivery time of 30-45 days (due mainly to the high volume of orders we expect to receive from this announcement). Previous limit of one per option is no longer in force. Customers may purchase up to ten additional rifles in any combination (per year).  Customers may also purchase up to ten barreled receivers in any combination per year. More information available at http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/m1903.htm

Subject: Insufficient chamber headspace in M1903 rifles

CMP has received reports that a few M1903 rifles shipped to customers have insufficient chamber headspace. This was discovered when the customer encountered unusual resistance when attempting to close the bolt on a chambered cartridge, or the bolt could not be closed at all. Thus far the problem involves only rifles freshly rebarreled with WWII replacement barrels, which were manufactured with “short” chambers to allow finish reaming for correct headspace after installation. CMP has concluded that a small number of these rifles were not correctly finish reamed at the arsenal. Insufficient headspace (unlike excessive headspace) does not present any significant safety hazard in an M1903 Rifle. However, it can interfere with proper functioning and should be corrected. Until recently CMP checked rifles for excessive headspace only, using a “no-go” gauge. CMP is now rechecking all rifles in house with a “go” gauge to assure minimum headspace as well. If you experience unusual resistance in chambering a cartridge, first unload the rifle and make certain the chamber is clean.. A heavily fouled chamber will produce the same symptoms as insufficient headspace. Brush out the chamber with a bronze or bristle brush if necessary. Then try to chamber a standard U.S. military M2 ball service cartridge. If it is still difficult to rotate the bolt closed, discontinue using the rifle. Do not try to use the rifle by slamming the bolt shut or forcibly turning the bolt handle down. Contact CMP for instructions to return the rifle for repair.

CMP Update 06/14/02

This is a special message about some great CMP programs for shooters and gun enthusiasts who can answer “yes” to any of these questions:

¥ Are you looking for a new shooting sports adventure?

¥ Have you always wanted to try competition shooting, but are concerned that traditional

competitions require too much expensive equipment or time commitment?

¥ Would you like to shoot in the National Matches on the famous Camp Perry ranges?

¥ Do you want to learn how to be a better rifle or pistol shot?

This summer during the 2002 National Matches at Camp Perry, the CMP is offering three programs especially designed for anyone who answers “yes” to any of these questions. If these programs interest you, click on the links that will lead you to detailed information and entry forms.

¥ RIMFIRE SPORTER RIFLE MATCH. This fun-oriented, new match will take place at Camp Perry on Saturday, July 20. If you have a scope or open sighted rimfire sporter and want to try a competition that does not require special equipment, this match is worth checking out. http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Competitions/CMPGamesOfficialProgram.PDF  (see pages 9-11 for the rimfire program)

¥ RIFLE SMALL ARMS FIRING SCHOOL. This is one of the best instructional schools available anywhere. U. S. Army Rifle Team members instruct and other military team members coach. Shooting is done with M-16s on the Camp Perry ranges. School registration is on July 27, with the school on July 28-29. http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Competitions/SAFS.pdf

¥ PISTOL SMALL ARMS FIRING SCHOOL. This is another great instructional school that is taught by the U. S. Army Pistol Team with support from other service experts. Experienced shooters fire .45 cal. service pistols; new shooters fire M1911 pistols with Colt Ace .22 rimfire conversions. School registration is on July 7, with the school on July 8-9. http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Competitions/SAFS.pdf

Openings are still available in all three of these programs. If you have questions about any of them, contact CMP Competitions at competitions@odcmp.com.

CMP Update 05/22/02

************************************************

Marla Faulkner and Shelby Peto retire from CMP.  Marla and Shelby have both recently retired from the CMP. Both of these ladies have been with the DCM/CMP for many years and we join the thousands of our customers in thanking them for the service they provided to the shooting community.

Personal letters or cards addressed to either Marla or Shelby may be sent to the CMP attn: Pat Gittinger, who will forward  the mail to them.

************************************************

We wish to thank all of our customers for the orders placed during the past two months. In addition to the large amount of orders for the M1903 and M1903A3 rifles, there has also been a sharp increase in orders for the other rifles and receivers we offer. As a result of this demand, we have completely sold out of several models. Although we list these as sold out, many customers who have already submitted orders made the cut and will still receive the items they ordered. We request that customers not call to check on their order. Over the next few weeks someone from CMP will contact those customers whose orders we are not able to fill.

************************************************

Mossberg M44s Sold Out.

The CMP has received orders for the remaining 3,000 serviceable M44s that we have on hand. It will still take 60-90 days to complete processing and shipping on existing orders. Orders received between now and May 31 will be placed on a backorder list in case of cancellations or NICS denials. Orders received after May 31 will not be processed. We still have approximately 500 rusty M44s, but at rate of incoming orders we will most likely discontinue taking applications by 31 July.

************************************************

We have received orders for the quantity of R030RILC rifles we have remaining. We expect to be able to fill all orders currently on hand.

************************************************

Danish M1 Garands with VAR Barrels.

************************************************

Springfield Armory Grade A stripped receivers still available.

We have sold out of all Grade A stripped receivers except for SA. Backorder lists for the other manufacturers have been established and we will continue taking orders and adding to the list. Waiting time cannot be determined accurately, but is expected to be very lengthy.

************************************************

All Grade B Stripped Receivers on backorder.

We have sold out of all Grade B receivers for all four manufacturers and have established backorders for this option. Waiting time may be extremely long.

************************************************

Winchester and International Harvester M1 Garands in all grades on backorder.

We have established backorder lists for these rifles and will process orders as rifles are located and they pass inspection. Waiting time for orders received now will be a minimum of 12 months.

************************************************

CMP South Volunteer Program Update.

The volunteer program at CMP South has been very popular. We schedule three volunteers per day, and dates get booked well in advance. Currently we still have a few days open in July and August, but June, September, and October are completely booked.

CMP Update 05/07/02

CMP Store: The CMP store at Camp Perry is now open. Hours are Monday to Friday 9:00AM to 3:00PM. We will maintain this schedule for the next few weeks, and will open on weekends during the National Matches.
